These and other surprising elements can be found in a new art exhibit, "Landscapes Lost and Found: Two Centuries of Art from Bolton Landing," at the Bolton Historical Museum. Cole also ventured to the North Country and painted the Lake George landscape, along with a long parade of famous painters. Warren's Lake George landscape predated Thomas Cole's founding of the Hudson River School by eight years and there are parallels with Cole's aesthetic. One of the earliest landscapes is Henry Warren's 1817 painting of Bolton Landing as seen from Federal Hill, a western shoreline view depicting Sawmill Bay, Green Island and the Recluse Islands in an idealized, Romantic style. The inspiring setting fired the artists' creative imaginations as they rendered Lake George's sublime landscapes of water, forests, mountains and sky in styles that ranged from Romanticism to Abstract to Surrealism.
